Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival To Kilimanjaro International Airport

Upon arrival at your lodge in Arusha this evening, you will have the option to eat dinner at the lodge or retire to your room for the night to rest before the next day’s activities. The lodge is an old-fashioned island of quiet tucked away in a plantation and is a great place to unwind after the rigours of long flights. Arusha is only 3 degrees south of the equator, but its 4,500-foot elevation encourages floral luxuriance and gentle airs. So we’ll be more or less surrounded by enthusiastic greenery as we sit on our plantation veranda, perhaps after a relaxing swim looking up at massive Mount Meru. This 14,977-foot volcanic colossus looms beneficently over this quintessentially African city.

Day 2:Transfer to Tarangire National Park

Breakfast: At the lodge. Morning: We will board our safari vehicles and depart to our lodge in Tarangire. After arriving at Lake Burunge, we will get familiar with our lodge. With 9 distinct vegetation zones ranging from grassland to woodland, from deep gully vegetation to scattered rocky hilltops, Tarangire offers a diverse geological landscape, as well as diverse wildlife, including the largest recorded concentration of breeding bird species in the world. Baobab trees dot the landscape, and the valley of the Tarangire River dominates the entire scene. Lunch: We will enjoy our lunch at the lodge in the afternoon. After lunch, explore the surroundings of the lodge, a permanent tented camp in the midst of the wilderness. Dinner: At the camp. Evening: You are free to remain in the lounge area to discuss the day's activities or share pictures of the animals you saw with fellow group members.

Day 3: Explore Tarangire National Park

Breakfast: At the camp. Morning: We drive to Tarangire National Park for a morning game-viewing drive. The variety of wildlife here is excellent, from lion, cheetah, zebra, and Cape buffalo to a wealth of birdlife. Elephants are plentiful here, traveling in large herds that are not often seen elsewhere in Africa. Lunch: After several hours of game viewing, we will enjoy a picnic lunch in the park. Then, we'll continue our game-viewing drive to witness the wildlife of Tarangire National Park. Afterwards, we'll head to our lodgings, a permanent tented camp in the midst of the wilderness. Dinner: At the camp. Evening: You are free to remain in the lounge area to discuss the day's activities or share pictures of the animals you saw with fellow group members.

Day 4: Transfer to Karatu (Ngorongoro Highlands)

Breakfast: At the lodge. Morning: We will drive to Mto wa Mbu, situated in the Great Rift Valley between Karatu and Makuyuni, home to around 18,000 people with a diversity of ethnic backgrounds. In fact, it is believed that this village is one of the only places in Tanzania where representatives from all 120 communities live in harmony. During our time here, we'll discover the importance of agriculture to this village, which is known for producing crops like the famous red banana. We'll also walk to the local market to peruse various ingredients, which we will bring to the home of a local farmer. Lunch: After our visit, we'll arrive at our lodge for lunch. Then, you'll have a couple of hours to settle into your room or start exploring on your own. Later this afternoon, our Trip Experience Leader will take us on a guided walk through the village where our lodge is situated. We'll see locals going about their daily routines. Dinner: At the lodge.

Day 5: Visit to Hadzabe and Datoga Cultural Tours

Breakfast: At the lodge. Morning: Today's discoveries begin in Lake Eyasi, where we'll visit 2 lesser-known Tanzanian communities. First, we'll meet with the Hadzabe, one of the last remaining hunter-gatherer people in the world. The Hadza are also known for their unique "click" language, which is believed to be one of the oldest languages still in use today. We'll also have the unique opportunity to explore the bush on foot, seek out bird species during our visit, and see how life has changed little in more than 10,000 years for the Hadzabe. Then, we'll meet with members of the Datoga people, who are thought to have migrated here from Cape Horn about 3,000 years ago. Skilled farmers and craftsmen, the Datoga are also known for the circular scarification patterns on their faces added for beautification purposes. Lunch: We will enjoy a picnic lunch at one of our camps in Eyasi. After lunch, we will drive back to our lodge. Dinner: At the lodge. Evening: On your own.

Day 6: Transfer to Serengeti via Ngorongoro Crater

Breakfast: At the camp. Morning: We break camp and begin our drive to Ngorongoro Crater in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Upon arrival, we descend to the floor of Ngorongoro for some game-viewing in the volcano, which was probably once the size of Mount Kilimanjaro. The caldera of Ngorongoro marks the ancient walls of a collapsed 2,000 feet. The crater's rim is 7,500 feet above sea level, the highest altitude we will reach on our trip. Lunch: A picnic lunch in the crater. Afternoon: Our experienced driver guides, experts at locating the animals, determine our route as we exit the crater and make our way to our lodge in Central Serengeti. If lucky, you may spot various animals. Dinner: At the camp. Evening: You have the freedom to spend the evening as you wish.

Day 7: Drive and Explore Northern Serengeti

Breakfast: We will have a relaxed breakfast and depart for game drives around 8:00 AM to Northern Serengeti with a packed lunch. We will explore the central portion of the Serengeti National Park today and move towards the northern part of the park. The game drive en route toward this part of the Serengeti region will offer mild action from resident games. As you approach the northern part of the Serengeti, you will notice the terrain change from the usual plain grassland to a more hilly and broken terrain. The northern region offers a variety of resident game such as zebras, topis, gazelles, buffaloes, leopards and lions. Lunch: A picnic lunch will be enjoyed today. Based on the time of your arrival, you can spend a few hours by the Mara River. Dinner: The eventful day comes to an end with a heavy dinner and a good night's rest in your tent.

Day 8: Game Drives in Serengeti & Optional Balloon Ride

Morning: Early risers are welcome to join our optional Sunrise Safari and Hot-Air Balloon Tour. An early wakeup call will be rewarded with a pre-dawn game-viewing drive on safari vehicles on your way to the hot-air balloon ride, which offers a new perspective of the Serengeti and the creatures that call it home. Breakfast: For travelers on the optional tour, a full English breakfast will be served with sparkling wine under the shade of an acacia tree following your balloon ride. Breakfast is at the main dining tent for all other travelers. Set off on a game-viewing drive this morning. Lunch: At the camp. Afternoon: After some free time, we'll set off for more game viewing. Dinner: At the main dining tent. Evening: You can remain in the main dining tent area or around the campfire to discuss the day's activities with fellow group members or retire to your tent to rest before tomorrow's discoveries.

Day 9: Full-Day Game Drive

Breakfast: At the camp. Morning: Continue to explore the ecosystem of the Serengeti aboard our safari vehicles. Our schedule and approach to our game-viewing drives are designed to maximize our understanding of this region and its inhabitants. We'll travel at a pace (and at times) that allows us to truly focus on observing animal behavior and interaction. Lunch: At the camp. Afternoon: As the wildlife tends to rest during the early afternoon hours, you'll be free to relax at the camp before our final game-viewing drive in the Serengeti. This is a great opportunity to seek out any animals we may have missed and to ask any lingering questions of our Trip Experience Leader or driver-guides. Dinner: We'll toast to the memories we've made during our adventure at a farewell dinner at camp. Evening: On your own with the freedom to reflect on your favourite moments or to gather with your fellow travellers to revel in the vast expanse of the African skies one final time.

Day 10: Drive to Central Serengeti

Breakfast: At the lodge. Morning: Enjoy a full day of game viewing as we make our way to Central Serengeti National Park, perhaps one of the most famous wildlife-viewing spots in the park. Masses of wildlife roam the Serengeti, which stretches over 5,700 miles of plains, riverine bush, and acacia woodland, with savanna grassland as the dominant environment. Lunch: Enjoy a boxed lunch within the park. Afternoon: We'll resume our game-viewing drive, seeking out the wide range of wildlife species that call the Serengeti home. Lion, cheetah, hyena, and jackal stalk herds of gazelle, zebra, wildebeest, and impala. Later this afternoon, we'll arrive at our tented camp, our home for the night. Dinner: At the camp. Evening: On your own. You're free to retire to your tent to rest, especially if you join tomorrow's early-morning optional balloon safari or enjoy a drink at the bar.

Day 11: Fly to Arusha - Day Room - Fly Home

Breakfast: At the camp. Morning: We'll say goodbye to the Serengeti and fly to Arusha, where we'll visit Shanga, a local enterprise that employs people with physical disabilities. In this workshop, our small group will meet with locals, learn the basics of sign language, and see how these artisans create unique, artisanal gifts. After our visit, we'll enjoy the services of a day room at our lodge in Arusha. Lunch: At the lodge. Afternoon: Fly overnight back home or you can opt to extend with us to Zanzibar
